Ceiling Lift vs Hoyer Lift: Which One Fits Your Home?

Both move someone who cannot bear weight. A floor lift, often called a Hoyer, rolls on wheels and has to fit under the bed and through your doorways. A ceiling lift hangs from a track, so it has neither problem, but it must be installed and it works only where the track runs. Measure under your bed first. That number rules a floor lift out of many homes.

Before you decide, measure these five things

  • The clearance under the bed, taken at the lowest point rather than the middle. That is usually a frame crossbar or a center support leg.
  • The clear opening of every doorway on the route, inside edge to inside edge at the narrowest point.
  • The floor space beside the bed and beside the chair, since the lift has to turn there while loaded.
  • The ceiling height and, if you can find out, which way the joists run.
  • The person’s weight, and the weight rating on the specific model you are considering.

Floor clearance under the bed decides this more often than anything else

A floor lift works by rolling its wheeled base under the bed so the mast stands beside the person and the boom reaches over them. If the base will not go under, none of the rest of the machine matters.

Published base heights for home lifts cluster around four to five inches. Manufacturers advertise figures like 4.5 inches and 4.9 inches of under-bed clearance, and describe that as enough for most homecare and hospital beds. Most is not all.

Platform beds are the usual failure. A solid platform base, a storage drawer unit, or a decorative side rail that runs to the floor leaves nothing to roll under. Divan bases and beds with a fabric skirt hiding a solid frame do the same thing.

Measure at the lowest point of interference, not at the tallest gap. Equipment suppliers who deal with returns are specific about this: find the frame crossbar or the center leg, then measure floor to that point. That is your real clearance.

If it does not clear, you have three honest options. Raise the bed on proper bed risers rated for the load. Change to a hospital bed, which is usually the better answer anyway because it adjusts. Or go overhead, where the bed frame stops being part of the problem.

What you must not do is lift at an angle from beside the bed because the base will not go under. That is how a loaded floor lift tips.

Doorways and turning space

Suppliers generally quote 24 to 30 inches of base width for a floor lift, plus several feet of room to maneuver. The width is the easy part. The turning is what catches people out, because you need that space with a person suspended in the sling, not with an empty machine.

Some bases narrow to pass through a doorway and widen for stability during the lift. Read your manual for how yours works, because a narrowed base under load is the single biggest tip-over risk on a floor lift.

Bathrooms are where floor lifts run out of room. A standard bathroom doorway, a vanity, and a toilet in a corner leave very little floor for a base plus a caregiver plus a turn.

A ceiling lift has no footprint, so tight rooms stop mattering. What replaces the problem is routing. A track crosses a doorway only if it passes through the wall above the door, which means opening up that header area, and home modification specialists list cutting doorways among the changes a track route can require. Otherwise you plan for two separate systems, or one room only.

Who can operate each one alone

This is the question that decides whether a caregiver can keep going, and the honest answer has two parts.

Equipment suppliers consistently describe floor lifts as taking more physical exertion, and more than one caregiver, while a ceiling lift is described as a one person device. Others say a single trained caregiver can run most floor lifts, with training first. Manufacturer ratings differ, so the manual for your own model governs, not a general statement on any website including this one.

The second part is the sling. Neither device puts the sling on. Rolling someone from side to side to place the fabric under them is a two person job for many people, whatever is hanging above the bed. A ceiling lift removes the pushing and steering, not the positioning.

OSHA’s nursing home ergonomics guidelines take the position that manual lifting should be minimized in all cases and eliminated where feasible. That is the argument for going overhead in a busy home, and it matches our Hoyer lift guide: once transfers pass roughly six to eight a day, or the caregiver’s back or shoulder starts hurting, price a ceiling track.

Installation, and the gantry that skips it

A floor lift needs no installation. It arrives, you assemble it, you use it.

A ceiling track is different in kind. Ceilings are built to hold up the floor above them, not to carry a person hanging underneath. So the track has to be engineered to your specific structure, and that is a job for people who install them for a living.

What installers actually look at

Which way the joists run comes first. Track running across the joists spreads the load over several of them, which is what you want. Track running parallel to the joists puts the whole load on one joist, and that needs unistrut spanning several joists with threaded rods, or cross bracing added between joists.

A drop ceiling carries nothing. Installation guidance is blunt about it: a drop ceiling cannot support the lift, let alone the person. The fix is rods up to the real structure above, or wall mounted brackets instead.

Ceiling fans, light fixtures, sprinkler heads and wiring in the route all cost money to move. So do vaulted ceilings and curved track sections.

The freestanding gantry

A gantry is a freestanding frame with uprights at each end that holds the same track and the same motor, with nothing fixed to your house. It is the answer for a rental, an apartment, a condo where drilling is not allowed, or a ceiling that cannot be reinforced.

A typical home gantry is rated around 440 pounds, assembles without tools, adjusts in height and length, and weighs about 50 pounds in total. Manufacturers recommend two people to put one up.

The tradeoff is honest and worth saying plainly. A gantry puts four feet back on your floor, one at each corner of the frame, so you have given back part of the space advantage that made you look at overhead lifting in the first place. It covers the bed. It does not follow you to the bathroom.

What each one costs, in orders of magnitude

Prices move, so treat these as scale rather than quotes.

A ceiling track is a construction project. One national home modification cost guide puts a typical installed ceiling lift at $4,500 to $8,000. Another 2026 industry guide puts complete systems at $10,000 to $25,000 and above, and names total travel between rooms as the single biggest driver.

A freestanding gantry sits in between. One widely sold home model lists at $3,299 for the frame, with the lift motor sold separately at around $3,938, so the pair lands near seven thousand dollars with no construction at all.

Coverage is the other half of the arithmetic. Medicare covers a patient lift as durable medical equipment when the person would otherwise be confined to bed, and manual lifts are covered far more consistently than powered ones.

An installed track is a different conversation, usually paid through waivers, grants, veterans’ programs or out of pocket. Before you spend anything, work through the ways to get equipment paid for or loaned, and call a loan closet.

What happens in a power cut

This is the question people ask last and should ask early, particularly if you live somewhere that loses power in storms.

A manual hydraulic floor lift uses no electricity at all. You pump a handle. An outage changes nothing about it, which is a genuine and underrated advantage.

A powered floor lift runs on a rechargeable battery, not on wall current, so it keeps working through an outage until the battery runs down. Many models sound an audible warning when the charge drops below half. Keep it on charge as a habit.

A ceiling lift is also battery powered and charges at a docking point on the track, so it does not stop the moment the lights go out. On top of that, an emergency lowering function is a regulatory requirement on these systems, alongside an emergency stop and overload protection.

Emergency lowering works differently by brand. On one manufacturer’s portable ceiling lift it is a device turned with a standard 6mm hex key. Other designs release the motor brake and let gravity bring the person down slowly. Find yours in the manual now, and keep the tool with the lift.

Some manufacturers also state that the lift must be checked by a qualified technician before it is used again after an emergency lowering has been triggered. Read that section of your manual before you need it, not during.

Use caution

  • Weight ratings apply to the lift and to the sling separately. The lower of the two governs the transfer.
  • Check the sling for frayed webbing, pulled stitching or bent clips before every single use, on either system.
  • Neither device replaces hands-on training. Ask for a therapist to watch you do it in your own home.
  • A ceiling lift only reaches under its track. A fall in the hallway is still a floor level problem.
  • Take the free measurement visit a supplier offers before you commit to a track route. Fixing a wrong route later costs more than the first install.

Stop and get help

  • The base will not go under the bed and you are about to lift at an angle instead
  • Any webbing is frayed, any stitching is pulled, or a clip is bent
  • The lift drifts downward on its own when raised, or a battery warning sounds mid transfer
  • Anyone proposes fixing track to a drop ceiling, or to a single joist running parallel to the track
  • The person slides or shifts inside the sling while suspended

Nobody wants to think about this part while they are choosing. Think about it anyway, because it is a real difference between the two.

A floor lift leaves the way it came in. It rolls out the door. It sells secondhand, it donates, and loan closets take them back and lend them out again. Some models fold, which is also why a floor lift can go with you to a relative’s house or a rented vacation place.

A ceiling track does not. The brackets are lagged into joists or hung on threaded rods, so removal means taking the track down, filling the fixing holes, patching the ceiling and repainting the room. The track itself was usually cut and shaped to your route, so it rarely fits anyone else’s house.

The motor is the part that holds value. There is an established market in refurbished ceiling lift motors sold with warranties, with typical listings around $2,995 for a like new or gently used unit. That is worth knowing in both directions: it is a way to buy in for less, and a way to recover something later.

A gantry splits the difference. It disassembles into pieces, sells complete, and leaves no holes at all. If the situation might be temporary, or the house might not be yours for long, that matters more than the extra floor space it takes.

When this stops working

Most families end up with both, not one. A track over the bed where the transfers happen twenty times a week, and a floor lift kept for the bathroom, for the living room chair, and for picking someone up after a fall. If you are already at the point of pricing a track, price a used or borrowed floor lift alongside it rather than replacing one with the other.
