Properly Using a GivMohr Sling

In this instructional video, we will demonstrate how to properly put on a GivMohr Sling, an essential tool designed to provide support and improve the mobility of individuals with shoulder and arm weakness or instability. …

A GivMohr Sling is a support device specifically designed to assist individuals experiencing shoulder subluxation (arm dislocating from shoulder joint socket) or significant arm weakness, common issues faced by patients with neurological conditions like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Its use is particularly beneficial in the following circumstances:

Shoulder Subluxation Management: For ALS patients experiencing shoulder subluxation due to muscle weakness, the GivMohr Sling helps in stabilizing the shoulder joint, reducing pain, and preventing further joint damage by maintaining proper alignment and distribution of weight across the shoulder.

Reduced Arm Mobility: As ALS progresses, patients may face increasing difficulty in controlling arm movement due to muscle weakness. The sling supports the arm in a functional position, promoting comfort and reducing the risk of muscle contractures and stiffness.

Enhanced Postural Support: The sling aids in maintaining an upright posture by supporting the arm’s weight, which can alleviate some of the strain on the back and shoulder muscles, helping to prevent posture-related discomfort.

Increased Independence and Safety: By stabilizing the arm, the GivMohr Sling can enhance the patient’s ability to engage in daily activities with improved safety and confidence. It reduces the risk of falls related to balance issues caused by unsupported limbs.

Preventive Care: Early use of the sling, even before significant subluxation or weakness is present, can serve as a preventive measure to protect the shoulder joint and muscles from the strain associated with ALS progression.

The decision to use a GivMohr Sling should be made in consultation with healthcare professionals, such as an occupational therapist, who understand the specific challenges faced by ALS patients. They can provide personalized advice on the timing and duration of sling use, ensuring it is integrated effectively into the patient’s care plan to optimize comfort, functionality, and quality of life.

In managing ALS, caregivers often face challenges in mastering the application of new assistive devices

Assisting your loved one to properly put on a GivMohr Sling can seem intimidating at first, but when broken down into simple steps, you can become an expert. Understanding the process of applying the sling correctly is crucial for its effectiveness.

Here is a detailed outline of the steps involved in assisting your loved one to put on a GivMohr Sling safely and effectively:

Key Steps in Putting on a GivMohr Sling

  1. Preparation: Start by fully extending the GivMohr Sling and identifying each part, including the shoulder loop, arm strap, and the four tab adjustment buckle. Ensure the sling is adjusted to the approximate size of the user for a starting point. When you are looking at your sling, locate the side with the pinstriping. This side goes on the inside and should be the portion touching your loved one’s skin. Also, the four tab has GivMohr Sling written on the outside, so you want to be able to read this once your loved one is wearing the sling.
  2. Positioning the Sling: Stand or sit beside the person needing the sling, offering reassurance as you proceed. Make sure you communicate throughout the process. Start by putting their arm that will not be wearing the sling through the shoulder loop. Take the remaining two straps and gently drape them over the shoulder. Now, bend the elbow and bring the fingers through the opening for the hand. Slide the tubing up to the webspace between the thumb and the first finger for a comfortable and supportive grasp. Gently release the hand and allow it to hang next to the body. Finally, pull the back strap down and around the elbow. The elbow strap should be around one inch down from the elbow toward the hand and almost horizontal.
  3. Adjusting for Comfort and Support: Adjust the straps so the arm is comfortably supported, not lifted too high or hanging too low. Remember, the goal is to achieve a position that feels natural and supportive without adding strain to the shoulder or neck. You want each shoulder to have the same rounded shape, minimizing the subluxation divot in the affected shoulder as much as possible.
  4. Final Checks: Once the sling is in place, ask the person about their comfort level and check for any areas that may need readjustment. Ensure the arm is supported in a functional position that allows for minimal strain on the shoulder.

Practice Makes Perfect

Practicing the use of a GivMohr Sling is crucial for several reasons, ensuring that both you and your loved one can maximize the benefits this supportive device offers. Regular practice allows for familiarity with the sling’s components and proper fitting techniques, ensuring it provides the intended support and alignment for the arm and shoulder. This familiarity also minimizes the risk of incorrect application, which can lead to discomfort or inadequate support.

Through practice, you can fine-tune adjustments for optimal comfort and functionality, catering to the specific needs and preferences of your loved one. This personalized fit is essential for preventing potential complications such as skin irritation, circulation issues, or increased risk of shoulder subluxation.

Following these guidelines will assure you and your loved one experience ease and confidence when putting on a GivMohr Sling.
